Maltese Multisport Club Agones SFC founder and president Warren Muscat was recently appointed Secretary General of the Gibraltar Cycling Association.
Muscat’s appointment comes a few months after Muscat was appointed National Team Manager for the 2017 Gotland Island Games and 2019 Gibraltar Island Games. In addition to this post, Muscat also forms part of the Island Games Association Cycling Board. A post to which he was elected in 2017 by delegates of over 25 countries represented in the Association.
“Although Gibraltar is a very small country there is a buzzing cycling scene, and this comes as no surprise since its neighbour, Spain, is considered to be one of the world’s great cycling destinations, in no small part because of its huge range of excellent cycling routes which cater for mountain bike and road cycling enthusiasts, weekend and professional riders. It is also a fact that many people in Gibraltar use their bike as a means of commuting” explained Muscat.
Muscat and his team will be focusing on preparing Gibraltar’s National Cycling team for a number international commitments, the first of which will be the forthcoming Commonwealth Games, and the organisation of cycling races for the 2019 Island Games.
In addition to this, the Association has embarked into a two- year programme aimed towards promoting cycling in Gibraltar and to encourage competitive cycling amongst youths and females. As part of the Association’s efforts to give more international exposure to its athletes, Muscat looks forward to the possibility of joint projects and closer co-operation with the Malta Cycling Federation.
“It is an honour for me to be entrusted with this responsibility, I am confident that the expertise I have gained as a sports administrator will definitely be put into good use. This brings also a lot of pride for me to carry the Maltese flag abroad” concluded Muscat.
