It was a full day of squash on World Squash Day, Saturday 14th October, held at the Cynergi Health & Fitness Club.
The squash day started with 10 younger players enjoying the two junior events that were held in the morning.
In the final of the B event that was held in the afternoon, Marco Falschlunger managed to win against an always improving Roberto Bugeja 11-8, 10-12, 11-5, 11-8. Alessandro Pizzolotto won the playoff for third place against Jonathan Calleja.
The final of the main event offered a grand finale to the day. Kresten Hougaard, a top 5 world player in racketlon and recent winner of the Malta Racketlon Open, won the first game comfortably against 13-year old Kijan Sultana and looked like he was coasting to victory.
Young Kijan, however, showed plenty of character to come back and clinch the second game 12-10.
The deciding game was again close. With Sultana on a 10-9 match ball, Kresten was fighting hard and determined not to concede. It took a 59 shot, 90 second gruelling rally for the equally determined youngster to win the crucial point and the tournament.
Kim Galea, Malta’s top female junior player, also performed well to claim third place in this A event.
Malta Squash would like to thank Cynergi, for hosting the event, and Ivan Balzan who was running all the events on the day.
There are three more tournaments scheduled for this year. The Malta Union Club Squash Open will be held on Saturday, 11th November. This will be followed by two squash tournaments in December, one on Saturday 2nd in aid of L-Istrina at the LivingWell, and the final tournament this year in aid of Angela House will be held on Wednesday 13th December at the Marsa Sports Club.
