The third and final race in the Eurosport Birkirkara St. Joseph 5k Road Running Series, held on the Mtarfa By Pass took place on Wednesday 16th August in hot and humid conditions. Nevertheless, the hot summer conditions did not deter participation and  the series has seen its popularity increase with over one hundred twenty five athletes taking part.

Athletes Charlton Debono and Lisa Marie Bezzina cemented their position as Malta’s top athletes, when they secured three successive wins, retaining the titles they won last year in the process.  In both categories Debono and Bezzina had comfortable wins without major drama or upsets.

In the Males category, top podium places were reserved for Stephen Azzopardi and Shaun Galea, the latter pipping Matthew Cutajar to the third place on the podium for the overall classification. Cutajar featured on the first race’s podium however he was replaced by Galea in Races two and three.

Celine Pace, a newcomer to the Series and with a track and field background featured regularly on the podium. Pace secured an overall second placing whilst Francesca Arrigo claimed third place. Arrigo is no stranger to these races and this year faced some stiff competition from the likes of Gianella Bugeja, Hannah Pace and Joelle Cortis.

Trophies for the overall series were presented to top three male and female athletes as well as Age Group winners.

Euchar Camilleri, Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club’s Secretary General noted that “Although summer is generally considered off season for many athletes, the Eurosport Birkirkara St. Joseph 5k Road Running Series’ popularity is certainly not waning and we have seen increased participation.  The Club this year introduced electronic chip timing which has gone down very well by our athletes and also enabled spectators to view results in real time”.

The Club’s athletic commitments will continue on the 24th, 25th and 26th November when the 27th edition of the Eurosport Malta International Challenge Marathon will take place and will wrap up on the 13th December with the Eurosport Fleur-de-Lys 10k and 5k Road Races.
