A good number of Maltese players took part in the FISTF Major of Ilioupoli that was played in Athens, Greece.
An excellent result was obtained in the Veteran category, where two Maltese players reached the final. In a very tactical and balanced final, both Charles Aquilina and Jason Pisani played at their best in a goal less draw, with Charles Aquilina eventually winning on penalties by three goals to one. In a few months’ time, Aquilina will be leading the Maltese veteran team during the World Cup in Paris. Another Maltese player that took part in the tournament was John Zammit, who reached the group stage, only to be eliminated on goal difference.
In the Open category, four Maltese players took part, with Angelo Borg reaching the semi-finals, only to lose against I.Vlassopoulos of Greece by two goals to one. In the Last 16 phase, Angelo won against another Maltese players, Massimo Cremona by three goals to one. Brothers, Josef and Mauro Camilleri qualified from their respective groups, with Josef losing against Nicos Beis of Greece, who eventually won the tournament.
On the other hand, Mauro reached the Last 16, only to lose against Italian giant Saverio Bari.
Two Maltese players took part in the Under 19 category, with Tristan Fenech reaching the semi-finals, after finishing runner up in the group phase. Greek D. Dimopoulos eliminated Fenech by five goals to two to end
his good run. Jurgen Balzan in his first year as an Under 19 player, reached the group phase.
More Maltese players are taking part in overseas competitions and the results obtained are quite good. A lot of progress is being made in this sport and all those interested can contact the Maltese Association on
