Hon. Clifton Grima, Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Sport and Voluntary Organisations said that in recent years SportMalta supported Maltese athletes and MAAA through different initiatives.
He mentioned the investment of 100,000 euros for the refurbishment of the warm-up track in Marsa, as well as schemes offered by SportMalta such as the Flexi Training Scheme and the Youth Scheme to assist athletes when competing abroad. Hon. Grima referred to the electoral manifesto whereby the government has pledged to invest 300,000euros for the resurfacing of the existent track and stated that he is looking forward to more initiatives that will strengthen the sports of athletics. He said that now that the Commercialisation Law has been approved, sports associations could become self-sustainable and make the utmost of the land through commercial initiatives.
The Parliamentary Secretary’s address occurred during a press conference held today at Marsa during which the names of the Maltese athletes who will be participating in the European Athletics Team Championships Third league were announced. The competition will take place this weekend coming weekend.
Hon. Grima stated that such events reinforce the sport tourism industry and concluded by auguring success to the Maltese athletes.
The European Team Championships is a competition that groups National Athletic Federations that are affiliated to European Athletics into four leagues: Super League, the First League, the Second League and the Third League.
The 2017 edition will be the seventh edition of the European Team Championships 3rd League and it will be held in Marsa, Malta for the second time. The first time was in 2010. The Third League of European Team Championships will welcome athletes representing the following Federations: AASSE, Azerbaijan, Luxembourg, Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Malta, Andorra, FYR Macedonia, Montenegro, Armenia, Georgia and Kosovo.
