During last weekend Malta was represented by three local clubs, namely Valletta Subbuteo Club, Bormla Subbuteo Club and Valletta Lions in the Champions & Europa Leagues which is being held in Rome under the auspices of the Federation of International Sports Table Football (FISTF).
On Saturday all teams had played in the Qualifying rounds to determine in which competition the teams will play on Sunday. The Qualifying round consisted of 32 teams playing in groups of four (4) teams. The first two teams in each group will qualify for the Champions League, while the other teams will play the Europa League.
Valletta Subbuteo Club which are the local Champions, in the qualifying rounds which were played on Saturday in their group had Issy of France, Bologna Tiger of Italy and Triburones of Spain. Valletta came 1st in there group after winning against Issy 4-0, Bologna Tigers 3-1 and 4 -0 against Triburones.
Finishing 1st in the group Valletta moved to the Champions League tournament where in the group stage they managed to win there group by winning 2-1 against Glide,Slide,Chip & Dip of England, 1 -0 against Black & Blue Pisa of Italy and draw of 2-2 against Perugia of Italy. In The Quarter Finals Valletta had to play against Mattersburg of Austria were they lost 2-1.
Valletta then had to play the playoff match for the 5th to the 6th position against Charleroi of Belgium in which Valletta lost 2-1. Then Valletta had to play for the 7th and 8th play against Falcons of Greece. Valletta managed to win this game 2-1 and finished 7th in the Champions league.
Bormla Subbuteo Club finished 7th position out of 16 teams in the Europa League. In the Qualifying rounds which were played on Saturday Bormla in their group had Olympia, Rochefort and Ascoli. Bormla came 3rd in there group after losing against Rochefort 3-1, Ascoli 2-1 and managed to obtain a draw of 2 -2 against Olympia.
Finishing 3rd in the group Bormla moved to the Europa League tournament where in the group stage they managed to win there group by winning 3-0 against Athinaikos, 2 -1 against Proteas and 3-1 against Scarlet Battalion. In The Quarter Finals Bormla had to play against Bolognia Tigers. Bormla played a good game and managed to draw against Bolognia, but Bolognia qualified from the quarter finals with the goal difference.
Bormla then had to play the playoff match for the 5th to the 6th position against the Portuguese club Maio De Tires in which Bormla lost 2-1. Then Bormla had to play for the 7th and 8th play against TSG Rain. Bormla managed to win this game 3- 0 and finished 7th in the Europa league.
Valletta Lions TFC finished 9th position out of 16 teams in the Europa League, thus moving 6 places up from the previous year.
In the Qualifying rounds which were played on Saturday Valletta Lions in there group had Perugia, Falcon Athens and Mallorca. The Lions conceded two defeats against the 3rd world ranked team from Greece, Falcon Athens losing 4-0 and against the Italian Club Perugia 2-0. In their last game the Lions won 4-0 against the Spanish club Mallorca.
Finishing 3rd in the group the Valletta Lions moved to the Europa League tournament where in the group they lost against the strong team in the group Wiener Nuestadt (Austrian) 4-0, then lost 1-3 against the German team TSG Rain and won the last match against the French side FTC Issy les Molulineux 3-1.
The Lions then had to play the playoff matches for the 9th to the 16th position in which the Lions won all 3 matches against the Scotish club Dundee United TFC 3-1, same score against the Greek team Scarlet Battalion and 4-0 against the other Greek team Athinakos.
In addition to the local teams there were other Maltese players taking part in these competitions since they play with foreign team namely Massimo Cremona playing for Reggiana, Hansel Mallia playing for Fiamme Azzurre, Angelo Borg playing for Napoli Eagles and Jean Carl Tabone playing for Stembert.
The Champion league final was contested between two Italian teams namely Fiamme Azzurre and Reggiana. In the final there were two Maltese players playing for their team, namely Hansel Mallia playing for Fiamme Azzurre and Massimo Cremona playing for Reggiana. The final was well contested and Reggiana Managed to win the final for the second consecutive year.
