Alvin Vella won the Donald Vella Memorial on Sunday 09 October 2016.

This Event was organised over a two day period and it was the first of the three selection shoots for the ISSF World Cup Shotgun to be held in February – March 2017 in New Delhi, India.

In this weekend’s event, four athletes achieved the ISSF Olympic Games Minimum Qualification Score (MQS) that is 112/125 hit targets. The qualification scores of these athletes who eventually also made the semi-final were, 114/125 hit targets obtained by George Mifsud and Brian Galea, Stephen Vella hit 113/125 and Alvin Vella managed 112/125 hits.

The other two shooters who made the semi-final were Paul Formosa with the qualification score of 107/125 and Nazzareno Attard who scored 106/125.

Five of the six shooters who competed in the semi-final hit 12/15 targets from a single shot and a score of 11/15 hits, was registered by Paul Formosa who was eliminated.

In the five-way shoot-off it was Alvin Vella and Nazzareno Attard who qualified for the Gold Medal Match, with Vella hitting 12+3 and Attard hitting 12+2+1.

On the other hand, Stephen Vella and Brian Galea were forced to compete in the Bronze Medal Match as they managed 12+2+0 and 12+0+2 respectively, while George Mifsud failed to qualify in a Medal Match as he scored 12+0+1.

Alvin Vella was the overall winner as he defeated Nazzareno Attard in the Gold Medal Match with the score of 10/15 hits to 9/15 hits.

In the Bronze Medal Match, Brian Galea and Stephen Vella tied scores again when they both smashed 11/15 targets from a single shot. In another shoot-off, it was Brian Galea who secured a place on the podium as he had the best of Stephen Vella with the score of 11/15+5 to 11/15+4.

A perfect straight of 25/25 was registered by George Mifsud on Day 2 of the competition.

The top shooters in their respective classes concluded Sunday’s two qualification rounds of 25 targets per round with;

Class A

1st George Mifsud 48/50

2nd Brian Galea 46/50

3rd Stephen Vella 45/50

Class B

1st Frank Scorfna 43/50

2nd Paul Sant 42/50

3rd Eugene Borg 42/50

 

Class C

1st Michael Galea 38/50

2nd George Polidano 35/50

3rd Steve Azzopardi 32/50

The MSSF Shotgun Trap Programme will continue on Sunday, October 16, 2016 at the Qormi Clay Shooting Club at 10:00.
