Last weekend the Malta Table Football Sports Association (MTFSA) participated in the World Cup organised by the Federation of International Sports Table Football (FISTF) which was held in Mons, Frameries in Belgium
On Friday the FISTF organised the Annual General Meeting to which Malta was represented on the Board by Joe Zammit Pavia, occupying the position of Vice President/General Secretary and also attended for this meeting the Maltese board members, John Zammit (General Secretary) & Jason Pisani (Finance Director). The Annual General meeting was followed by the presentation of all the nations and afterwards by the World Cup draws.
On Saturday there were the individual categories events. Malta was represented by Charlie Aquilina, Massimo Cremona, Jason Pisani and John Zammit in the Veteran Category, Derek Conti, Angelo Borg and Andrew Abela in the Open Category, Neil Mark Bonnici in the Under 19 Category, Jurgen Balzan in the Under 15 Category and Joseph Agius in the Under 12 Category
In the Veteran Category Massimo Cremona had win the Silver medal after losing in the final against the Italian Gianfranco Calonico whilst in the Open Category Derek Conti won the bronze medal after losing in the semi- final against the Italian Luca Colangelo. In the Under 15 Jurgen Balzan had made it to the quarter final after losing against the Italian Leonardo Giudice.
The Other Maltese players, Jason Pisani and Charles Aquilina, John Zammit (Veterans category) and Angelo Borg (Open category) were eliminated in the Last 32 sessions. The Under 19 player Neil Mark Bonnici and the under 12 player Joseph Aguis were eliminated in the Group stage.
On Sunday there were the Teams categories events. Malta participated in the Veterans and in the Under 19 Categories. The Veteran Team was composed from Charles Aquilina (Captain), Massimo Cremona, Jason Pisani, John Zammit, Joe Zammit Pavia and Angelo Borg whilst the Under 19 Team was composed from Jurgen Balzan, Neil Mark Bonnici and Joseph Agius.
The Veteran team was very unlucky where although the team remained unbeaten with 3 draws against Gibraltar, Greece and Champions Italy did not managed to qualify. In the game against Italy (World Champions) the Maltese were all the time leading but suffered the equalising goal in the last 10 seconds of the game which eliminated them from the group.
In the Under 19 category the Maltese were handicapped since the team had only 3 players instead of the usual 4 players which could play in this category.
The MTFSA would like to thank all the players who represented Malta in the World Cup for their commitment and achievements.
