The Association’s flying site at the northern end of the Ta’Qali National Park was buzzing with activity last Saturday 28th May for the Official Inauguration of the Model Aeroplane All Weather Shelter. This two year project was the brainchild of the present Committee led by Hon. President Martin Mifsud, and now provides a quantum leap in comfort and protection for both aeromodellers and their model aircraft in both extremes of sun or rainy conditions with a 240sq metre open ‘hangar’.
The Project was officially inaugurated by the Hon.Luciano Busuttil LLD MP, Chairperson of SPORTMALTA (KMS) and was the result of close cooperation between SM(KMS), and the MMAFA which had successfully applied for partial funding under the Capital Projects Funding schemes for sports entities launched in December 2014.
Dr. Busuttil praised the Committee for its foresight and energy in capitalizing on available funding schemes to bring this great project to fruition. He especially praised the great many members of the Association present for the occasion with their prized exhibits for their enthusiasm, technical skills and flying ability. He welcomed the vision of the Association which focuses on bringing up talented youngsters into the hobby which has served as a stepping stone for many junior members to very rewarding careers in the developing and highly skilled aviation industry locally and abroad. Members of the Association come from all walks of life, diverse occupations, trades or professions, and nationalities too, but all bound together by their common PASSION for flight and all things mechanical.
The beautiful weather set the scene for some spirited and beautifully executed and realistic aerial displays under a rigorous safety protocol by various types of remote control model planes and helicopters expertly flown by members with an average wingspan of between 2 to 3 metres and some even powered by Jet Turbines.
President Martin Mifsud thanked Dr. Busuttil on behalf of the over 160 Association’s members for his enthusiastic support to the lesser known but very active and long standing sporting Associations such as the MMAFA ever since he took the helm of SportMalta and presented Dr. Busuttil with a commemorative Silver plate marking the occasion.
It is significant to note that this model flying club is the OLDEST SPORTING ASSOCIATION OF ANY KIND OPERATING AT TA’ QALI ON RECORD as the founder members started flying models at Ta’Qali in 1948 during the days of the RAF (68 years ago!).
The MMAFA is affiliated with the KMS besides being a registered NGO and VO member and operates at Ta’qali under a formal lease from Government. The Association also maintains close ties and excellent relations with the Civil Aviation Directorate Malta.
