The IWF Gran Prix is one of the most expected event for this year as this will be the last chance for many athletes to qualify for the Olympic Games in Rio. These championships will be taking place in Tehran, Iran from 30th May to 2nd June.
The Malta Weightlifting Association (MWA) will be participating for the first time in this high-level competition with Kyle Micallef in the 85kg category. This Grand Prix is open for male athletes in categories from 85kg to +105kg only.
Micallef is a well-experienced athlete and this year already showed he is in a good form after breaking national records and gained excellent results in the European Small Nations Championship last March in Cyprus.
Jesmond Caruana, President of Malta weightlifting, was selected by the IWF to be one of the Technical officials in this championship.
This Sunday, 29th May, the MWA will be organising the Malta Open Championship for men and women for all categories. A good number of participants, from six different clubs, have registered for these competitions. All of this will start at 9.30am with Cadets under 13, followed by Under 15, 17, 20 and the seniors at the Cottonera Sport Complex.
