Maltese athletes participate in the 27th European Kendo Championships
The 27th European Kendo Championships were this year held between Friday 1 and Sunday 3 April in Skopje, Macedonia. Fighters from 37 countries participated in this high level competition, including Maltese kendoka Jonathan Mallia (captain), Kersten Mallia, William Gatt and Rami Abdalla. The team had been preparing for this event over the past 2 years under the guidance of National Coach Kazuyo Matsuda (6th Dan) and Maltese Kendo Federation Technical Director Paul Budden (7th Dan Kyoshi).
The championships were spread over three days, in which team and individual tournaments were held for juniors, females and males. Malta was in a pool together with the strong Hungarian and Polish teams, and failed to qualify for the tournament. Poland in fact made it to the finals and was only beaten by France, the country which has claimed the title most often since the first EKC. In the men’s individuals competition all Maltese athletes gave a strong performance, and Malta managed for the first time to qualify for the elimination tournament as Gatt placed first in his pool. He was later also awarded a medal for Fighting Spirit.
Malta’s participation was assisted by SportMalta through funds distributed under the Technical Equipment Scheme
